India’s leading telecom network, Bharti Airtel, made a major announcement today giving fierce competition to India’s fastest growing network Reliance Jio by making roaming charges free. After Reliance Jio had announced lucrative data packs for the users, Bharti Airtel came out in competition with Jio’s packages making the incoming calls free in national roaming. Airtel announced free national roaming in a counter act to Reliance Jio’s major announcement last week.
Airtel announced that there would be no additional charges on federal charges from 1 April 2017 and also home data packs will be applicable on roaming with no extra charges. After Reliance Jio announced its Premium data packages applicable from 1 April 2017, telecom companies are likely to get fierce competition from Jio.
“This marks the death of national roaming, and the whole country will now be like a local network for our customers, who will not have to think twice before making or receiving calls or using data while traveling outside their home base. Airtel has again set the benchmark in delivering best in class value backed by a great network experience,” said Gopal Vittal, MD & CEO, Bharti Airtel.
Recently Bharti Airtel announced it would acquire Norway-based Telenor, to broaden their telecom circle. Last Year, Vodafone, India’s second largest network bought Idea Cellular making national roaming free. Since Reliance Jio’s announcement for prime membership which provides free voice calls and data packs at the cheapest rate brought a major revolution in the telecommunication segment.
Reliance Communications, on the other hand, is in the process to acquire Aircel to remain in the competition along with Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone.
