Have you heard about e-cigarettes? Yes, electronic cigarette! It is an alternative to conventional cigarette and is getting popular among younger adults as it is considered a healthier alternative to conventional cigarettes. But a recent study has revealed that even electronic cigarette is not safe for your body. It can majorly contribute in damaging your gums and teeth.
The study has been done by researchers at University of Rochester Medical Centre in the US. It is the first scientific study to address e-cigarettes and their effect on oral health on cellular and molecular levels.
E-cigarette is a handheld electronic device that vaporizes a flavored liquid. The person inhales the vapor. The fluid in the e-cigarette, called e-liquid, is made of nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerine, and flavorings.
E-cigarette was introduced in the market in 2004. By 2013, people got aware of this and its usage also expanded globally. However, growth in the US and UK had slowed in 2015, lowering market forecasts for 2016.
It is said that an e-cigarette helps in quitting smoking but research has said that it is as addictive as a conventional cigarette. E-cigarettes do not burn tobacco, but they do heat and vaporize liquids containing nicotine. When the vapours from an e-cigarette are burned, it causes cells to release inflammatory proteins, which in turn aggravate stress within cells, resulting in damage that could lead to various oral diseases.
Irfan Rahman from the UR School of Medicine and Dentistry said, “How much and how often someone smokes e-cigarettes determines the extent of damage to the gums and oral cavity.”
The study published in the journal Oncotarget has revealed that apart from nicotine, flavouring chemicals also play a role in damaging cells in the mouth. What user inhales is aerosol, not at all good for health. “We learned that the flavourings, some more than others, made the damage to the cells even worse,” Fawad Javed from University of Rochester Medical Center said.
So those who chose e-cigarette over a traditional cigarette thinking that it will not harm your body, after this study, it would be better for you to quit smoking. Neither the conventional cigarette nor the electronic cigarette is good for you.
