The Ramjas College violence has taken a new turn after Lady Shri Ram College first Year Student, Gurmehar Kaur; daughter of 1999 Kargil martyr, came under the scanner of attack from all over the country, including prominent public figures from sports, cinema, and politics. After the Ramjas College ruckus, a strong protest against ABVP was held out from across the university campuses. The crowd divided into two halves with one supporting ABVP and other AISA marching out against the BJP backed ABVP.
Gurmehar Kaur who came out in protest against ABVP was targeted for her previous post where she aimed to have peace talks with Pakistan. Fumes of fire started after Cricketer Virendra Sehwag posted a picture of himself supporting India and counteracting Gurmehar’s post. Sehwag’s post got support from many including actor Randeep Hooda who backed the idea of Gurmehar about war with Pakistan. After the troll of tweets had started in social media, Gurmehar was attacked by many as well as some supported too.
The fire against Gurmehar spread more after BJP MP from Mysore Pratap Simha and Union Minister Kiran Rijiju attacked her with anti-national remarks where the former compared her to India’s most wanted criminal Dawood Ibrahim. Also, the matter worsened after Gurmehar received Rape threats from ABVP members. Gurmehar was attacked from all over after which she filed a complaint in Delhi Police for Women Commissioner after receiving threats over social media posts.
Amidst all the protests against her, Aam Aadmi Party came out in support of Gurmehar where the AAP leaders like Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodiya slammed BJP for their reactions over Gurmehar’s case. Delhi CM also thrashed BJP saying the party is full of ‘Hooligans’ and ‘criminals.’ Also Bollywood’s eminent personality Javed Akhtar came out in support of Gurmehar Kaur saying that she has her right of freedom and can voice over to any issue she feels. The teachers and students of Lady Shri Ram College too, came out in support of Gurmehar Kaur which issuing a public notice saying ‘she has responded sensitively, creatively and bravely to events in her immediate context rather than seek the safe refuge of silence.’ The College also bashed Virendra Sehwag and Randeep Hooda claiming their acts to be ‘shameful’ for suppressing one’s right of freedom and speech.
As the war of word continues, Gurmehar has taken the social media to announce her withdrawal from the movement against ABVP but urged students to come out in large numbers to stop the chaotic nuisance created ABVP. In the meanwhile ABVP, who maintained the patriotic rage from the first day, held out a ‘Tiranga March’ led by all his supporters. Also, teachers and students from various colleges of DU and JNU along with AISA members marched against the withdrawal of ABVP from the campuses.
The incident from Ramjas College has inevitably spread across the campuses taking Gurmehar under his flames, but Gurmehar strongly reacted by criticizing people who made anti-national remarks on her.
