New Delhi (GST Bill): On Friday, a meeting took place between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at (7, Race Course Road) the official resident of prime minister. This is to try and get the political parties to break the existing deadlock on the important Good and Service Tax Bill as the government is hoping to get through in the parliament.
As far as Congress is concerned, they have three very critical sticking point on the GST Bill where first is to capping the rate of tax and enshrining that in the bill, secondly is the levy for states and the third an independent regressed mechanism.
Now the question arises will the two opposing side are going to agree to work together on the bill? Well, that’s something we’ll have to wait to see in terms of what happens in discussion.
First formal meet of PM Modi, Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh on GST Bill
This is the first meeting which is taking place between the Congress president Sonia Gandhi as well as the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the back troop of the fact that they haven’t really had a formal discussion like this ever since BJP came to power in 2014. Off course this comes in the back troop of the fact that the finance minister and the prime minister have been publicly not only in India but internationally saying that we will roll out the goods and service tax in 2016, having said that we must remember that BJP don’t allow to be passed to full five years after UPA government introduced the bill.
The Congress party says we have an open mind but as we listed earlier there are three non-negotiable and unless of course there is some give and take and there is some compromise offered then they may get Congress party support.
Today was the preliminary meeting in which both the former prime minister and Congress president refused to speak to media after they left, so we have to wait and watch what exactly the press release come from them on GST bill but as of now what have been told and indicated categorically is yes, the preliminary meeting is taking place but don’t hope too much this time.
