Delhi University’s Ramjas College violence is seen to be spreading more and more after DU student Gurmehar Kaur posted a post on her social media account speaking out her protest against BJP backed ABVP (Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad). Gurmehar Kaur, Daughter of 1999 Kargil Martyr Captain Mandeep Singh, expressed her protest against ABVP by changing her profile picture which shows Gurmehar holding a controversial placard.
Gurmehar’s act has brought her in circles of controversies with people across the nation giving mixed reaction on her move. Due to this action, Gurmeher’s earlier post came into the limelight where she has seen a placard which says, “Pakistan didn’t kill my father, but the war did.” It has emerged as a major reason for criticism for Gurmehar. Shockingly, Gurmehar’s act has taken a political turn after BJP MP from Mysore, Pratap Simha compared Gurmaher to Dawood Ibrahim. Also supporting Pratap Simha’s comment, Union Minister Kiran Rijiju asks her who’s polluting her mind.
After Ramjas College violence over the cancellation of two days seminar on the campus because of JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid and ABVP protesting against the speakers stating them as anti-nationals. It led to the violence between ABVP supporters and Students and teachers. The students and Ramjas College protested against ABVP which led Gurmehar Kaur to led out a protest against ABVP.
After her remark, Cricketer Virendra Sehwag posted his picture holding a placard which counteracted Gurmehar’s act. It led the ministers to take a political jibe over this matter. Gurmehar Kaur also went to file a complaint with Delhi Commission for Women after alleging threats over social media posts. She also stated of getting rape threats from the ABVP supporters.
Gurmehar Kaur justifies her campaign against ABVP and also reacts to her being called anti-national by saying, “People are calling me anti-national. I think it is horrifying when people threaten you with violence or with rape. A guy named Rahul has given a detailed explanation on how he would rape me. Providing rape threats to women of your country in the name of nationalism is just not correct. It just isn’t.”
On the other hand, Aam Aadmi Party has slammed BJP for their comment on Gurmehar Kaur. “A girl is being threatened by rape on social media. Not a single BJP or RSS leader called it wrong or condemned it. Why” Aam Aadmi Party leader Ashutosh tweeted. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal to stands out against BJP’s remarks saying BJP as a party full of ‘hooligans and ‘criminals.’ “Threatening our daughters and sisters with rape; is this BJP’s patriotism? Shame on these people,” he added.
