As per a recent study, red wine has a number of health benefits for women. It can help in treating polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), diabetes, ageing, etc. All this is possible because of a natural compound resveratrol present in it.
In a recent study done by a team in Poland and California, researchers have concluded that red wine can cure infertility which is a common problem among women these days. The study was also published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
PCOS is a common endocrine condition that occurs when follicles in the ovary, which contain egg cells, swell up and the egg cell itself does not mature properly. The eggs contained in these cysts fail to be released at ovulation, which can cause infertility in women. Resveratrol works in lowering steroid hormone levels in women suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome. It also helps in treating PCOS’ symptoms which include weight gain, unwanted and excessive growth of hair especially on face and chin, infertility and abnormal menstrual cycles.
This polyphenol called resveratrol is also found in peanuts, blackberries and chocolate. Resveratrol turns on an enzyme called SIRT1, which has the ability to enhance the age-delaying benefits of exercise. It can increase a person’s lifespan by reducing the risk of having diseases such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and inflammation.
It is important to understand that if this substance is taken as a pill, the liver quickly degrades the majority of resveratrol before it can make it into the rest of the body. This means that only a very small amount of it can actually get to other tissues of the body. The effect of resveratrol will therefore be negligible if consumed as a pill.
Resveratrol also has side effects. It can result in diarrhea and other stomach problems. But the side effects are not so common and need not be scared of.
This beneficial substance resveratrol is present on the skin of red grapes. Thus, it is better to eat red grapes directly instead of drinking one thousand glasses of wine per day to achieve the desired health benefits.
